Origins[ edit ] A university in the city of Canterbury was first considered in , when an anticipated growth in student numbers led several residents to seek the creation of a new university, including Kent. However, the plans never came to fruition. In the Education Committee of Kent County Council explored the creation of a new university, formally accepting the proposal unanimously on 24 February The name adopted reflected the support of both the city and county authorities; as well as the existence of the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, which officially opposed the use of a name too similar to its own. However, the four original colleges — Darwin, Eliot, Keynes and Rutherford — remain, together with the newer Woolf and Turing colleges, each with their own masters. In July the tunnel collapsed, damaging part of the Cornwallis Building, which sank nearly a metre within about an hour on the evening of 11 July. In the university opened the University Centre at Tonbridge now the University of Kent at Tonbridge for its School of Continuing education , helping to enhance the availability of teaching across the county. Initially based at Mid-Kent College, a new joint campus opened in As a consequence of the expansion outside Canterbury the university’s name was formally changed to the University of Kent on 1 April In the university was rebranded with a new logo and website.

Writing and revising my transformations as a literacy teacher When Students Are Struggling: Because some units are not published for 8th grade and because we are all bravely piloting the adoption together, all three grades have started with A Deep Study of Character for the first nine weeks. The first session with a read aloud and guided discussion and practice with noticing character traits was this past Monday.
Though the lesson did not call for students to have a copy of the text, I realized after my first class my kids needed a hard copy of the mentor text. During my planning that followed 1st period, I made copies of a marked up version so they could see the different sections or parts we would navigate in our read aloud. In addition, I put together some slides to scaffold our conversations.

Monday, December 9, Book Speed Dating: I’ve wanted to try it out for awhile now, and I finally went for it last week. I wanted to use a smaller “test” group before trying this with a class of 35 eighth graders, so I tried it with our resource reading classes first. These classes are designed for struggling readers and generally have fewer than ten students. Because of the nature of the class, the students do not tend to be readers, nor are they generally intrinsically-motivated to read.
I had the best results with the eighth grade class, who better understood all my dating jokes “sometimes you have to kiss some frogs”, “sometimes you have to throw that fish back in”, “if at first you don’t succeed”, etc. They really enjoyed this lesson, and my eighth grade library assistants, who saw the speed dating as they worked in the library, all asked me to do this with their classes, too.
So here is what I did: Decide how you want the tables set up. I had 9 tables with 4 chairs at each table. Each table was a different genre. For the reading resource classes, I chose high-interest genres such as horror, humor, manga, nonfiction, survival, romance, sports, and realistic fiction.

Stonehenge There is evidence from flint artefacts in a quarry at Westbury-sub-Mendip that an ancestor of modern man, possibly Homo heidelbergensis , was present in the future Somerset from around , years ago. The British mainland was connected to the continent during the ice age and humans may have repeatedly migrated into and out of the region as the climate fluctuated. There is evidence of human habitation in the caves at Cheddar Gorge 11, —10, years BC, during a partial thaw in the ice age.
The human bone fragments it contained, from about 21 different individuals, are thought to be roughly between 10, and 10, years old. At the end of the last Ice Age the Bristol Channel was dry land, but subsequently the sea level rose, resulting in major coastal changes. The Somerset Levels were flooded, but the dry points such as Glastonbury and Brent Knoll are known to have been occupied by Mesolithic hunters. Britain’s oldest complete skeleton, Cheddar Man , lived at Cheddar Gorge around BC in the Upper Palaeolithic or Old Stone Age , shortly after the end of the ice age; however, it is unclear whether the region was continuously inhabited during the previous years, or if humans returned to the gorge after a final cold spell.
A Palaeolithic flint tool found in West Sedgemoor is the earliest indication of human presence on the Somerset Levels. These included the Post Track and the Sweet Track. The Sweet Track, dating from the 39th century BC, is thought to be the world’s oldest timber trackway and was once thought to be the world’s oldest engineered roadway. Many monuments, barrows and trackways exist. Coin evidence shows that the region was split between the Durotriges , Dobunni and Dumnonii.
The Iron Age tribe in Dorset were the Durotriges, “water dwellers”, whose main settlement is represented by Maiden Castle. Ptolemy stated that Bath was in the territory of the Belgae , but this may be a mistake.

A Quick Way to Expand Your Professional Contacts Networking can be one of the most powerful and productive activities an individual can do to launch and manage their career. In the workplace today, we need to be known to others as well as ensure that others are aware of how we might be a resource for them. Whether student, young careerist, or seasoned professional, having a network of people you can tap into for information, advice and opportunities, while sharing your own, is paramount.
Over the past five years, speed networking has emerged as a variation of traditional business networking activities for meeting people. Speed networking is a structured and fast paced networking event allowing participants to interact with others, typically in a series of brief one-on-one information exchanges. Speed networking takes its cue from speed dating, an event where individuals are allowed a short amount of time to meet a number of prospective dates, one at a time, and then choose who they would like to provide their contact information.

The top half is medieval. By the time of the Roman conquest of Britain , the area was occupied by a tribe known to the Romans as the Brigantes. The Brigantian tribal area initially became a Roman client state, but, later its leaders became more hostile and the Roman Ninth Legion was sent north of the Humber into Brigantian territory.
